MISSION : FULL ANALYSIS OF BLACK PEARLS INDUSTRY IN THE COOK ISLANDS
The purpose of the mission was to make a full survey of the Black Pearls industry implemented in the Cook islands in the years 1970, in the same way than in French Polynesia.
1- Meeting with farmers on the atoll of Manohiki and Penrhyn, to study their methods of farming and collecting shells, determine their needs and assistance requested by them.
2- Study the various means of financing offered by the local banks (private and public) to insure the development of the industry.
3-Meeting with jewelers and manufacturers in Rarotonga to find out the local possibilities to increase the local added value.
4-Study of the price structure, especially towards international buyers.
5- Report and suggestions to C.D.E. in Brussels:
Softer methods of culture for no trauma to the shells
More accurate method of grading of pearls.
More detailed prices structure for better revenue to farmers.
